The 34 Degrees Design Cartographic Series

More than a map. A work of place and memory.

Each work brings natural and man-made elements together in a richly detailed depiction of a real place, meticulously drawn to read cohesively at a distance and reveal elegant detail up close.

My cartographic artworks celebrate places, not just coordinates. Special places are memory, longing, and sometimes more: an identity, or a home.

Cartography, drawn as artwork

My cartographic artworks are born from contemporary technical skill, but they resist being trapped on a screen. They ask to be seen at scale, where the world’s complexity, detail, and beauty can be felt again.

A conventional map is made to show a place: functional, efficiently reproduced, priced to be accessible. This work has a different purpose. The geography stays real and accurate, and it is composed as an artwork, with terrain, contours, water, vegetation, settlement, roads and infrastructure balanced so the whole holds together across a room while close inspection keeps giving more.

At room distance. Landform, coastline and hydrology resolve into a single composition.
Printed detail of the Cape Town & Winelands A1 map art print showing contours, roads and settlement texture at real scale.
At reading distance. Contours, passes, farm names and routes, printed at the size shown against the rule.
Landscape
Terrain, coastlines, waterways, landform and the natural systems that give a region its shape.
Human geography
Settlement, roads, infrastructure and movement, drawn at the same fidelity as the land beneath them.
Composition
Thousands of geographic elements resolved into one artwork that has to hold together on a wall and reward standing close to it.

Two sizes of the same series

Every work is produced on demand for the order it belongs to. Nothing sits in a warehouse.

Cartographic Art Statement

My cartographic artworks celebrate places, not just coordinates. Special places are memory, longing, and sometimes more: an identity, or a home.

My own connection begins in the Cape, at 34 degrees south, in South Africa’s southernmost region, where craggy mountains, wild ocean, verdant vineyards, and crystalline austral light meet in ways that feel both elemental and deeply emotional. That latitude became more than a location; it became a lighthouse to guide creativity home. Through 34° Design, I turn geography into art pieces that can live in homes, hotels, offices, and places of gathering.

These works are for people who want more than a map. They are for those who want to keep a place close. My cartographic artworks are born from contemporary technical skill, but they resist being trapped on a screen. They ask to be seen at scale, where the world’s complexity, detail, and beauty can be felt again.
